Compaction Test
Compaction is the process of increasing the density of soil by reducing the volume of air voids through mechanical means. It is one of the most common methods used to improve the engineering properties of soil for construction purposes.
The degree of compaction depends on the water content of the soil. As the water content increases, the dry density of the soil also increases until a maximum value is reached. The corresponding water content is known as the optimum moisture content (OMC). Beyond this point, further addition of water decreases the dry density.
The bulk or wet unit weight of compacted soil is given by:

The dry unit weight is calculated as:

Principle of the Standard Proctor Test
The Standard Proctor Compaction Test is used to determine the relationship between water content and dry density of soil.
In this test, soil samples are compacted at different water contents using a standard amount of compactive effort. The dry densities obtained are plotted against the corresponding water contents to produce the compaction curve.
From the compaction curve:
- The maximum dry density (MDD) is determined.
- The corresponding optimum moisture content (OMC) is obtained.
These values are commonly used as standards for field compaction.
